Calming back-to-school jitters in anxious children

My daughter is starting school next week (cue the tears!), and it’s been an emotional rollercoaster around here because of the upcoming changes. A new teacher, new classroom, and new routines can be scary for kids.

My kiddo is headed into Second Grade, and while she loves her friends and is SO excited to get back into the swing of school (she is an extrovert who loves to be around people), there is that anxiety that likes to pop up and challenge her exuberance. The key to a smoother transition for us into the school year lies in helping our daughter stay calm by building steady routines, and keeping Christ at the very center of it all.

Starting by addressing the obvious

I try to start by addressing anxiety head-on. I talk openly with my daughter about their feelings. We also try to practice simple, calming techniques together: deep breathing, a short walk (or a swim in the pool together!), or listening to uplifting music (my daughter loves worship music).
Let’s remind our kids that God is present in every classroom and hallway. A quick morning prayer like, “Jesus, help me feel Your peace today,” can settle nerves before the backpack even goes on.

Why routines help

Routines provide the safety net kids need. This is SO true with my daughter. She loves structure and thrives within routine. What has helped us (in the smallest ways), is to create a simple evening checklist: getting homework done, showering, tidying her room, and making time for relaxing wind-down routines at night like reading or gentle art. Mornings work best around here with a consistent order, too — a quick, nutritious breakfast and an unshakeable routine about getting dressed and doing our hair.
The predictability of this routine reduces chaos and gives my daughter (and probably your children, too) a sense of control. When the unexpected happens, the routine becomes an anchor rather than a source of stress.
Most importantly, we are trying our best to make Christ at the center of her daily life. You can do this, too. Weave faith into the everyday moments and conversations. Read a short Scripture verse at breakfast (Philippians 4:6-7 is perfect for anxious hearts). Pray specifically for teachers, classmates, and courage with your kids.

Setting a good example

Let kids see you modeling dependence on God when plans change or frustrations rise. A small encouraging note in their backpack or a Bible verse on the fridge serves as a quiet reminder that school is not just about grades — it’s about growing in character and faith. In fact, I have been very clear with my daughter that as long as she does her best, I’m happy with her no matter what! It’s not about grades at all, when it comes right down to it. It’s about relationships and growing in the Fruits of the Spirit.
I hope this encourages you to take a breather with your kiddos and assess what you can do in your everyday routine to bring them peace and stability as the new school year approaches. Whether you’re homeschooling or your little ones are headed to public or private school campuses, there is wisdom in slowing down and establishing routines.
And remember to drill this into your kids’ heads: God is ALWAYS with them.

“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” (Psalm 91:4)
