Christian community is KEY to spiritual thriving

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when when brothers dwell in unity!” says Psalm 133:1.

Indeed, it’s a universal truth recognized across cultures and millennia: it is not good to be alone. Our communities, our families, and our friends are what make life richer and more meaningful. The human experience, created by God, is so much better when it is shared in the context of friendships and relationships. And for the Christian, fellowship takes on a whole new meaning.

Did you know that Christians are commanded to come together as one body? “Bear one another’s burdens, so fulfill the law of Christ,” says Galatians 6:2.

Hebrews chapter 10 also talked about how important it is to “meet together” and encourage one another, to stir up “love and good works,” as the day draws near to Christ’s return.

The unity of the church, when it exists in a healthy way, is a very special type of togetherness: “If one member suffers, all suffer with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually its members.” (1 Corinthians 12:26-27) And in Romans 12:5, the Bible tells us that although we are all individuals, we “belong to all the others,” indicating a special kind of oneness that only comes in the body of Christ – individualism within the context of intense togetherness.

Community is not something that should be overlooked. Sometimes, being with other Christians when you are going through a hard time in life is EXACTLY what you need – to have them pour into you and speak God’s truth over your life. And, hopefully, you can do the same for others when the situation calls for it!

This type of positive reinforcement is absolutely critical in the Christian walk. “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them,” Jesus says in Matthew 18:20. Indeed, just being together as believers has power – the Scripture is clear.

Don’t neglect this meaningful command! If you are a believer – new or old – find a church immediately and walk through those doors, friend! Plug into a community of Christians who can come alongside you in this journey through life as you walk with Christ. You will find peace, encouragement, and help in times of need. “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another,” says Proverbs 27:17.

How true this is!

To further examine the teachings of establishing deep and meaningful community roots, devotional author Abi Byrd recently shared her wisdom on this subject with the Counter Culture Mom Show. Do NOT miss her interview below!

Book of Romans Challenges Us to Serve, Fellowship, and Form Deep Community – Author and Speaker Abi Byrd

This holiday season, who can you bless or honor with God’s love? Abi Byrd is a speaker and the author of an eight-week devotional, You Stand in Grace – Devotions for Walking in Faith. Abi has seen firsthand how the Gospel has transformed lives and how community plays an integral role in honoring the Lord and blessing other Christians. Her devotional focuses on the rich Gospel truths of Romans. She points out that the book of Romans has a community aspect to it, and how this serves as an example of how important a healthy church community dynamic is. We want to be able to love each other and gather together in the Holy Spirit, even if we disagree, Abi says. We can’t do that if we’re on an island all by ourselves! Serve others in your church and community and discover how you’re blessed in the process.
