How many Christian marriages today are steeped in the pain of secret abuse?

Karen DeArmond Gardner is a survivor of domestic abuse that lasted over 30 years. She knows firsthand what women need to experience freedom from the lies of abuse. She is a pastoral trauma coach and advocate who provides crisis support for women seeking to break free from abusive relationships. Karen delivers insight and perspective on how spousal abuse can often lurk in the shadows, and how women often blame themselves for something that is not their fault. What does abuse look like? Does God really forbid Christians from getting divorced? Karen breaks down the well-meaning but sometimes damaging pieces of advice women often receive in the church about marriage – and how to think about it with a fresh perspective.

In this special two-part series at The Counter Culture Mom Show, dig deep with host Tina Griffin and guest Karen Dearmond Gardner. Discover the gritty realities of living through domestic violence and abuse – and how this brave guest escaped and healed!

The Bible is very clear that abuse is never okay. Colossians 3:19 says, “Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.”

And there are plenty of verses in the Bible that promise comfort and peace to those who are in the wilderness season and searching for a way out. “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit,” says Psalm 34:18.

Psalm 147:3 also declares, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Our God is a GREAT God. He is unfathomably wise and endlessly sovereign over all things. We hope this series on domestic abuse brings you clarity if you are in a tough situation, or if you are not, perhaps you can learn something that will help you reach out to others and offer a loving hand.
