DAVID: A film worth SEEING and SAVORING

There is rarely a film made these days that triumphs on three critical fronts: story, song, and heart. DAVID, Angel Studios’ titanic box office triumph, does all that and more.

Released December 19, the musically-driven animated film tells the story of the young shepherd boy David – a young man brave enough to wrestle a lion and stand up to a warrior giant with nothing more than a sling and a stone. This incredible tale of the world’s most famous earthly king is not just a feat of animated beauty (it puts modern animated films to shame with its lush designs and beautiful character details), it also offers a meaningful story of what it means to entrust one’s fate, destiny, and desires to God.

“The crown belongs to God,” says Jonathan, son of King Saul, in the film. This is a repeated theme throughout the movie – a reminder that all power and prestige and position stems from God’s graciousness, not from man’s own strength or ingenuity.

Set in ancient Israel, DAVID begins with a shepherd boy and follows his journey to kingship, and it is remarkably Biblically faithful to the original accounts from 1 and 2 Samuel. The characters are likable, David himself is relatable, and the story moves along at a clipped and enjoyable pace, with plenty of good, clean humor sprinkled in for good measure.

But it’s the MUSIC that makes this film shine like a diamond in the rough. From the opening “Adventure Song” to the gorgeous “Shalom,” every song tells a story, moves the plot forward, and paints a picture of how God weaves the threads of man’s destiny into an expert tapestry. Perhaps the most impactful – and realistic – song is “Why God.” The lament, sung by David in the film, captures the pain and frustration of feeling abandoned by God:

Why God?
Why have you forsaken me now?
I’m trying to feel you somehow
As I run from the shadow of death
Back to the wilderness
Why God?
Why would you lead me on?
You show me a glimpse then you’re gone
I’m trying to carry
Oh! Why God?
The biggest triumph of DAVID is the emotional punch it packs. You FEEL David’s struggles. He’s just a boy. God has tapped him on the shoulder to be the next king of Israel. David is a mighty warrior and a good man, but even he must face many trials and temptations. The film manages to find the right balance between gritty warfare, too, and what’s appropriate for a family movie.

Go see DAVID

In sum, DAVID was a beautiful film. It will go down in history as being one of the best faith-based films of all time, and rightly so: it has all the ingredients of a great movie, but with a hefty dose of moral superiority (literally), because it delivers a wonderful message: God can be trusted, and all power belongs to HIM.
This is a message that families can get behind, and it’s a fantastic departure from most of the mainstream slop Hollywood is shoveling out today, which is aimed at pushing selfish and godless messages to our children.
DAVID is an absolute MUST-SEE for adults and kids alike.
Because of battle sequences (Goliath, Saul’s violence, etc.), it might not be suitable for very young children. My daughter (almost 7) loved the film, and that seemed about the right age.
