It may be shocking to most of us, but euthanasia is quietly becoming more and more popular in other countries. While the concept of euthanasia is hotly debated, a seriously chilling question remains: what happens when euthanasia is seriously misused? At what point does it stop becoming a dark exit for those who are suffering tremendously from terrible diseases and instead become a tool of population control? 

According to the Daily Mail, for example, an 83-year-old Christian grandmother allegedly was not in her right mind when she consented to receiving assisted medical suicide in Canada. Here’s their reporting:

Two days before her Christian grandmother’s assisted dying procedure in Ontario, Canada, Brigitte Kranendonk sat her down to make sure she knew exactly what was going to happen.

‘I used very frank terms. I said: “Do you know that you’re going to die on Friday?”’

The 83-year-old was in visible disbelief and began crying for 45 minutes. ‘I’ve made a mistake,’ Brigitte Stegemann, known affectionately to her family as ‘GG’ or ‘Oma’, wailed.

Stegemann died (allegedly) 48 hours later, “with her hands clasped in prayer, covered in her own blood due to a botched first attempt at connecting the IV, administered by a nurse allegedly not wearing gloves.”

The story is horrifying, and it highlights a growing trend: according to a 2024 report from the Canadian government, nearly 16,500 people received medical assistance in dying (MAID) that year. And worldwide, more than 30,000 people annually are choosing MAID.

It’s obvious that people are choosing to take control of their own deaths rather than wait around…but is such a concept Biblical? And in the case of the 83-year-old Canadian grandmother, it’s easy to see how MAID could be used for seriously sinister purposes (watch any dystopian movie ever).

Christians should have a different stance on this. As previously discussed here on the CCM Blog, the human body is a temple, created in the image of God:

…In John 16:33, Jesus says, “…In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Nowhere in the Bible is there any kind of guarantee that Christians will have a fantasy-filled life free from suffering and strive. In fact, quite the opposite (2 Tim. 3:12, 1 Peter 4:12-13, James 1:2-3, etc.). And yet, the acute suffering we often struggle with hits like a brick to the face – it feels as if we are being punished for something. Perhaps it feels like God has abandoned us. Perhaps it feels like we’re trapped and there’s no way out.

If that sounds familiar, don’t worry – millions of people have been where you are. But remember what the Bible says in 1 Cor. 6:19-20:“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”

Euthanasia is not the answer. Christ is the answer! How we treat our bodies when we’re here on earth matters, because, as it says above, we were bought at a high price. Jesus values our lives, and we know that He has numbered the days of our lives exactly the way they need to be – there’s nothing but foolishness involved if we try to take control of that process.

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple,” the Bible says 1 Cor. 3:16-17.

Euthanasia, or MAID, is not a Biblical concept. It’s not a Biblical idea. God had sovereignty over life and death – not man. “A person’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.” (Job 14:5)
