In the United States, fentanyl – a deadly synthetic opioid that is 50 times more powerful than heroin – is a massive and very real threat to Americans. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 115 million pills containing illegal fentanyl was seized by law enforcement in 2023, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
It takes just 2 milligrams of fentanyl to potentially kill someone, and unfortunately, many are dying from this lethal substance, which is laced into many street drugs today. China has been caught red-handed providing the precursor chemicals to Mexico. Cartels then smuggle counterfeit pills across the border. Those who die from fentanyl don’t truly “overdose” from it, either – with a killing dose commensurate with just a few grains of salt, any counterfeit street pill laced with fentanyl can immediately kill a first-time accidental user.
It is a chillingly effective poison, and it is everywhere. Because of the dangers of fentanyl, it is imperative as parents to be aware of how to approach this extremely critical topic with their kids and effectively prepare them to protect themselves against it as they get older.
Here are two stories about fentanyl from last week’s Counter Culture Mom Show that you DO NOT want to miss!

Adrienne Sautter
The threat of fentanyl is deadlier and more pervasive than ever before. Illicit fentanyl does not discriminate. People of every demographic are dying from this poison. The Chinese Communist Party is incentivizing the production of illicit Fentanyl and its precursors for export, mainly targeting the United States. Nobody knows this better than Adrienne Sautter, who lost her son to fentanyl poisoning when he was just 19 years old. He took a single pill that was supposed to be a pharmaceutical narcotic, Percocet, but it was a counterfeit pill made entirely from fentanyl and binder. Today, Adrienne is the director of media relations for Facing Fentanyl, a not-for-profit national advocacy group warning the public about the dangers of illicit fentanyl.
Ginny Burton
Sometimes experience is the best teacher, and Ginny Burton has had plenty of it. As a severe heroin drug addict with 17 felony convictions, Ginny finally broke free from addiction at age 30 and turned her life around. Today, she is a business owner and advocate who works hard to direct policy change aimed at protecting people from the scourge and destruction of addiction, including fentanyl poisoning. Ginny’s life has been affected by tremendous loss due to addiction – including the loss of her 32-year-old son who committed suicide just a few weeks ago. “We’ve got to do something! What we’re doing isn’t working. We’re perpetuating the destruction of life across our country,” she urges. She explains how easily fentanyl can be obtained on the streets and what we can do to help others find freedom.
