How does the Bible define SUCCESS?

Opinion/Encouragement/Christian Perspective

What does it take to have a successful life? What is the standard of success, anyway? For the Christian, that standard is very different than the world’s monetary threshold of wealth and materialism.

The Gospel Coalition puts it like this:

“So how should we define the biblical meaning of success?

The answer is almost counterintuitive; when we work for God in everything we do, including our vocational callings, we truly find the purpose, fulfillment, and satisfaction that we all desperately seek.

We work at the pleasure of the Lord, driven by our love of God. Our only desire should be to hear him say, ‘Well done my good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Master.’”

To be faithful in little and much is the Biblical calling. In Matthew 25:23, Jesus tells the parable of several servants who were given watch over bags of gold. He describes a servant who was faithful over a small thing, and how he was rewarded: “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’”

In all that we do, whether it is a small thing or a big thing, we should do it all to the glory of God. THAT is true success!

It’s not about wealth or accumulating things. It’s not about whose car is shinier or whose kid got the part in the school play. It’s not about college degrees or income level or even political victory. At the end of the day, it’s all about living an obedient life, submitting to God’s Word and truth, and doing our best everyday to live our lives with dignity and integrity so that we may bear a powerful witness to those around us for the sake of Christ.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2
