In a society that is earnestly attempting to erase the word “mother” and replace it with asinine titles like “birthing people,” the importance of Mother’s Day cannot be overstated.

Whether you like it or not, mothers today play an integral role in shaping the lives of the next generation. The impact that moms have is evident in the lives of those who either grew up without a mother – or in the lives of those who tragically have lost their mothers.

Whether you’re a mother or if you have had a wonderful mother/mother figure in your life, we can all take a moment to appreciate the nurturing nature of some of the best ladies in our lives this weekend as we honor Mother’s Day!

What the Bible says about mothers

God created humans in his image, Imago Dei. He created us male and female (Genesis 1:27). In Mark 10, Jesus describes the sanctity of marriage and the importance of abstaining from divorce: ““It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Women were created to be helpmates to their male counterparts. Women, whether they are married or not, were born to work, to assist, and to nurture. It’s in our nature – God created us that way, and it is very, very good.

Mothers have a unique role in our lives, for good or for bad. A mother who abides by the law of God and passes down the knowledge and wisdom of Scripture to her children is carrying on a legacy of Biblical truth.

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

Parenting is not a competition or a status symbol: it is a very, very serious job. If we do not raise our children right, the onus of that responsibility rests on our eternal shoulders. A godly woman brings joy to her family. “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her,” says Proverbs 31:28.

Additionally, the Bible tells us that our parents are deserving of being honored. Ephesians 6:1-3 reminds us, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Honoring our parents is a lifelong endeavor – we are commanded to do so. Even in situations where mothers are not God-honoring or where mothers have not shown love and gentle kindness to their children. Even then, we are commanded to honor our parents. You can honor your mother, for example, by simply praying for her.

You don’t have to have a good relationship with your mother to do that – and God commands us to show love to everyone, even when it hurts. “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” Jesus said in Matthew 5:44.

If you are a mother or a mother figure in someone’s life, embrace that role with vigor and enthusiasm. It is a high honor to be a mother, and it doesn’t matter if you have one kid or ten – every mother is important, and every child matters.

“As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem,” Proverbs 103:13 says.

Mothers give life. They work hard. They juggle many tasks. Motherhood is not easy. If you’re in the thick of it – keep pushing through! Your child is a gift from the Lord, and every moment you spend pouring into that little one is important. Your impact on his or her life matters.

If you don’t have children, that’s okay! You are NOT less important – you are so very loved by God and you were created with a unique and wonderful purpose. Not everyone is called to have children, but there are likely some mother figures in your life who have shaped you into the woman you are today. Take a moment and thank them for that.

Motherhood is God’s gift to women everywhere – and what a wonderful gift it is!

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

Proverbs 31:25-26
