Do not be afraid because He is with us

The Bible reminds us consistently that we should not be afraid – but this can be a difficult commandment for us to take to heart.

In a world rocked with chaos and whispers of war, it’s only natural to feel afraid. The Lord knows this about our human nature, and so is it any wonder why there are so many reminders in His Word to cast our cares on Him?

Psalm 118:6 says, “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals to do me?” As the election creeps closer, it seems as if the news is increasingly negative and the world is becoming more unstable by the day. Election years are often a little chaotic, but in this century, it seems as if election cycles never end. As a child, I would always be in turmoil during election season. I would worry about the world, and whether Christian values would be protected by the leaders of our country.

As an adult, I still feel this anxiety acutely, but thankfully, I know now how important it is to rely on the Word of God during tumultuous times.

One of my favorite verses is John 14:27: “Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

This is so meaningful. No matter what is going on in our lives – or in the world – we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus is ultimately in control. The Father will triumph over evil in the last day, and as Christians, this is reason to rejoice, not fear.

Another favorite verse of mine is Psalm 46:1-3: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”

Amidst it all, Jesus Christ is the solid rock we can cling to as the storm’s of life hit us hard. “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?” the psalmist reminds us in verse 27:1.

With a national presidential election just a handful of days away, I encourage you to take heart and find comfort in the peace and strength of Jesus Christ and in the steady, unchanging truth of His Word. There is nothing else like it. At the end of the day, eternity is what truly matters, as does our relationship with Him.

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalm 23:4
