A special message for new school year anxiety

Am I the only one who reaches for the Kleenex box every time I think about my daughter going to Kindergarten? Time marches on, like it or not, and I swear it was only yesterday that I was holding her against my chest in a quilt as a newborn.

As a mother, I think it’s bittersweet to watch our children mature and grow. I once heard someone say that motherhood is the slow and steady practice of learning to let your children go – every step we take in parenting is to prepare our children to live independently as adults someday, to help them make good decisions, and to fortify their moral defenses for the challenges they will face in life.

I can’t remember who said it, but it’s something I think about often. If my child is becoming more independent every day, then I am doing my job as a mother. I am helping her grow in a healthy and well-rounded way. It is sad to see the babyishness melt away into mature girlhood, but it’s also beautiful. The conversations we have are deeper, her questions are more introspective, and the adventures we have together are more fun!

When she was born, I put the thought of education and school years far out of my mind. I thought, “I’ll deal with it when it comes!” And here it is. I can’t believe it, and while I know Kindergarten is just the first step of many academic milestones to come, it feels monumental. It’s the launching pad toward graduation and adulthood. As a mother of only one child, it feels like the beginning and the end at the same time, but I trust that God will not only take care of my daughter as she begins her school journey, He will also give me peace about it.

As we discern what is best for our children’s future heading into a new school year, for me, this year has been rife with tumultuous changes, challenges, and disappointments. Change is always difficult, and for me, this transition into full-time school is a hard one.

In Philippians 4:6-7, the Bible tells us, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

This verse is such a great reminder than even with a new school year, crunched calendars, academic challenges, and workplace hurdles, God is always there for us, offering us peace and comfort.

As you head into this new school year – whether you’re a teacher, a parent, or student – hold tightly to God’s promises this year and remember: You are not alone!
