Celebrating the END of Roe v. Wade

By Summer Lane

Today is a historic day for Christians and proponents of the prolife movement. In a landmark move, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) effectively overturned Roe v. Wade, which established abortion as a constitutional right in 1973, and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which reaffirmed the case in the 90s. Upward of 65 million babies have since lost their lives.

On Friday, the Supreme Court struck down the Constitutional right to abortion, triggering “red” states like Texas and Missouri to immediately ban abortion outright. Despite what prochoice sensationalists may be saying, what this decision really means is that the sovereign states will be making their own legislation regarding the legality of abortion now that federal protection for the procedure has been revoked.

You shall not murder. Exodus 20:13

What does this mean for women?

It doesn’t mean anything! A common red herring in the argument for abortion is that without the ability to kill an unborn child, women are losing their “right to choose.” The truth is, abortion is not about the mother. It’s about the baby. A baby and a mother are two separate, isolated, and unique individuals made in the image of God. Abortion only physically ends the life of the baby.

A woman becomes a mother the moment she becomes pregnant – and abortion is the act of ending the child’s life. Removing the “right” to have an abortion only saves the life of the baby – nothing more, nothing less!

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:13

Is abortion totally banned?

Not by a long shot! Friday’s Supreme Court decision simply removed the federal and Constitutional “right” to have an abortion. This means that regulations and restrictions regarding abortion will be decided by individual states.

For example, Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas announced on Twitter that abortion is now illegal in the Lone Star State. “And today I’m closing my office – and making it an annual holiday – as a memorial to the 70 million lives lost bc of abortion,” he added.

Blue states like California and New York will likely become strongholds for abortion in stark contrast to other states, who are already banning abortion outright. In fact, Governor Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., said on Friday that “CA, OR and WAS are creating the West Coast offensive. A road map for other states to stand up for women. Time to fight like hell.”

Abortion is gone in some states, but in others, prochoicers will do everything they can do dig in their heels and codify it.

How should Christians move forward?

Thank the Lord! Praise God for answering the prayers of decades of faithful Christians who have prayed for this day. Acknowledge that prolife organizations have been fighting a long, arduous, and oftentimes seemingly thankless battle for years. Today, there has been a first step toward codifying morality again.

For those who live in blue states, the work is far from over. Fight harder than ever to fire back at Newsom’s “West Coast offensive,” which will attempt to solidify permanent protection for the dismemberment of babies in the womb.

In red states, work to make sure that the bans on abortion remain solidified by continuing to elect lawmakers who will uphold the sanctity of life and protect the most innocent members of our society: babies!

Whether that work is through sharing information about the truth about abortion with your friends, families, or neighbors or volunteering at a local pregnancy care center, every tiny bit of support is important. Every bit of support matters.

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5

Will there be unrest?

There is a lot of talk about the aftermath of this decision, with the media postulating that there may be an outpouring of violent protests across the nation, starting Friday night. In fact, on Twitter, shortly after SCOTUS’ decision was announced, “Night of Rage” began trending on the social media platform.

Even more disturbingly, leading up to this decision, there have been nationwide reports of the vandalization and destruction of property for pregnancy care centers and churches. Will this type of behavior escalate from those who feel that killing children is a woman’s right? Perhaps, but remember this:

The right decision is not always the easy decision – and God will protect his church, his people, and the precious babies.

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18
