The Battle for Purity: How to Stop Losing It

by Katrina Cheshire

How to Stop Losing the Spiritual Battle for Purity

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.” – Philippians 4:8

The Problem

As Christians, we have heard about purity from time immemorial. We have been reminded that we must stay pure, stand strong, and be true to the Lord. Instead of losing the battle with our sin we need to save ourselves for His perfect plan for us.

And every word of it is true. We are called to live a life that pleases God, being an “example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). God has called each and every man and woman to walk before Him in cleanliness of heart. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are.

But none of us can do this in our own strength. We will fall if we seek to achieve perfect purity by ourselves. The truth is that no one is perfectly pure. We are all sinners, and if we try to work our way to the perfect standard of purity, we will fall. Maybe you have tried to do this. And if you have, then, like me, you have surely become discouraged. The struggle to keep your mind pure is a daily fight, and Satan will use every means in his power to poison you.

It’s quite a problem, isn’t it? Does it sound as hopeless to you as it does to me?

The Solution

God did not set us on this earth and just leave us to fight this battle on our own. It is a battle. The devil knows that if he can win your heart, he can destroy your life for eternity. He will come in the most subtle ways, and he will cause you to think that you must keep every rule perfectly.

This may be your downfall. We can’t keep every rule perfectly, but the we don’t have to. Someone else already did for us. Jesus came and lived a life of perfect purity so that we might access His righteousness.

When we lean on Him for strength and ask Him for His aid, He will help us to live in purity. It is a matter of the heart, a daily struggle that will last for as long as we draw breath. But it begins with wanting to be pure. It begins when we ask the Lord to help us to be pure in every area of our life. Start leaning on Him today, and watch the wonderful things He will do!

Practical Purity

What are some ways that we can practically be pure and help others to be pure? We have to stop losing the battle for purity. As a young woman who was raised to value purity from my earliest years, I have always deeply treasured purity. My name itself means “pure” so even as a little girl I wanted to be pure, before I really understood what it meant.

As a parent, you can begin instilling purity in your children at a young age. Some awesome books to help are The Princess and the Kiss, and The Squire and the Scroll by Jennie Bishop. These books are perfect to help young children understand the importance of purity.

If you are a young woman, the absolute best thing you can do for others is to be an example of purity! One of the greatest problems with purity is that people think of it as an awful, boring thing. In reality it is one of the most beautiful things you can imagine! Show others by your daily example, the way you dress and act, how wonderful it is to live a life of purity and striving after God. People can discount an idea, but they cannot ignore the evidence of a life lived for the Lord!

Grace for All

No matter where you are in your walk with the Lord, you can choose today to avoid sinful media that may cause you to think impurely. Your mind is a battleground for good and evil, and you get to choose the majority of what you put into it.

If you feel like you have lost your battle in the area of purity God gives SO much grace to start afresh! First of all, Do not allow the devil to discourage you with feelings of failure. We have all fallen short of God’s best for us. Above all we can choose today to make Him our focus and live a pure life before Him! Stop losing the purity battle!

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” – Psalm 19:14
