God Created Human Beings To Be Free

by Lisa Lotito

Happy Independence Day!

Our nation was founded upon the belief that God created human beings to be free. The Declaration of Independence states that people “are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Webster’s Dictionary defines the word “liberty” as freedom. Freedom is defined as the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.  Throughout history, countless examples of the human quest for freedom exist.  Our founding fathers and other brave souls sought freedom from oppression, slavery, tyranny, and persecution.  They all had something in common.  They believed God created human beings to be free and they made a decision to act

When it comes to freedom and our faith, actions matter:

“But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:25

In the story of Creation, humanity gave up its freedom by choosing to rebel against God. Adam and Eve’s choice to disobey God destroyed the perfect freedom found in the Garden of Eden.  God told the truth. He told Adam if you eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, “Dying you shall die”.  The long-term effects of Adam and Eve’s decision remain with us today. The spiritual death experienced in the Garden of Eden brought physical death into the world.  However, when we think of our freedoms, we tend to think about the physical not the spiritual

Sin is the SPIRITUAL SLAVERY that leads to death.

Many live in spiritual slavery without realizing it.  False gods come in the form of money, success, power, lust. We are slaves to these vices when we make bad decisions and act on them.  We need to pray for ourselves and others.  If God created human beings to be free, then Christ shows us the “new” true freedom.  Christ came into the world to free humanity from sin

“Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave. Now a slave has no permanent standing in the household, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.” John 8:34-36

So how do we obtain true freedom?

First, we must acknowledge our brokenness and recognize our faults. Then we have to admit we’re sinful and repent.  Once we realize that true freedom can only be obtained through Christ’slove and healing. we must CHOOSE Christ.

When we choose Christ, we choose true freedom. We are released from the bondage of sin.  Sharing this reality with those that remain prisoners of sin will give them freedom too.  Make the decision to act! Experience true freedom by sharing Christ’s love as we celebrate our “one nation under God” today and always!

Happy Independence Day!

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, rather serve one another through love”

Galatians 5:13
