YouTube PTSD – Working There Dangerous for Mental Health

The irony of ironies. Workers at YouTube are warned about developing PTSD while doing their jobs.

Counter Culture Mom has repeatedly talked about the dangers of letting kids run wild with YouTube.

A recent article in The Verge discusses new employment practices at YouTube admitting that people who work as content moderators are likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder! As a result, employees are required to sign a document acknowledging the risk:

“I understand the content I will be reviewing may be disturbing,” reads the document, which is titled “Acknowledgement” and was distributed to employees using DocuSign. “It is possible that reviewing such content may impact my mental health, and it could even lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)” (Newton).

So here’ s the question for you to consider. If adults working at YouTube for 8 hours a day watching and reviewing content are at risk of developing PTSD because of what they are watching, what does that say about the risk to your children? Adults are more mentally and emotionally equipped to handle stress and disturbing content. Young children, and even teens, are not.
