Making Earth Day Fun and Biblical For Kids!

by Katrina Cheshire

Will you celebrate Earth Day?

What better way is there to teach our kids about the Creator?

It’s typically one of “those” holidays that comes around and you look at the calendar and sigh. The holidays that seemingly have no spiritual significance and no real reason to celebrate? Well, sigh no longer! We’re talking about Earth Day, and there are plenty of ways of making Earth Day biblical AND fun!

We live in a beautiful world.

We live in a beautiful and wonderfully made world. Not only did God create the perfect environment for humans to live in. However, He also made it breathtakingly beautiful! Everywhere we look, we see examples of His handiwork around us.

Yet our culture has become increasingly obsessed with this world and the things of this world. Many don’t give a second thought to nature. Many who do focus on the earth often stress the importance of protecting our environment, animal life, and the seriousness of global warming, without a thought for the Creator of it all.

Taking care of God’s creation is honoring Him.

While good stewardship of our planet is definitely commanded in Scripture, we should never forget that God values human life above plant and animal life! Mankind alone was created in His image, and He set Adam in the Garden of Eden to tend it. We are called to care for this world, being wise about what we do with all that God has given us.

First off, making sure that your children understand this is a great place to start! When we look at the big, beautiful picture of God’s handiwork, we are reminded of all that He has blessed us with. It also brings a sense of awe at the responsibility He has entrusted to us. In the end, we are on this earth for such a short time, but we can make quite a big difference for the kingdom of God!

We lead them by our example.

Your kids will take their cues from you in this area. If they see you interested in God’s creation and concerned about caring for animals, they will learn to do the same. Furthermore, when you start making Earth Day something fun, you will teach them that they can explore God’s creation and find Him, even in their own backyard! Take them on hikes and field trips to explore God’s wondrous world. Get nature magazines and learn about wildlife and plant life in other countries around the world. Additionally, make it a daily priority to encourage your kids to get outside and explore!

Now for the fun stuff!

Reading a story with your kids on Earth Day is a great place to start!

Answers in Genesis has the BEST resources for kids! If you’re looking for information on creation or this beautiful world, head their way for solid and Biblically-based truth that will get your kids excited about God’s creation! They also have a kid’s website, designed just for children! Making Earth day memorable with fun activities and facts for kids, but being complete with the gospel message! This website may just make your child’s day.

Activities are another awesome way to make Earth Day fun.

  • First, try making a bug hotel with your children! What a fun way to show love to God’s smallest creatures!
  • Secondly, you can make an earth collage. They are super simple and can be done inside if it’s rainy! They are made out of paper plates and construction paper.
  • Thirdly, planting seeds or doing a scavenger hunt are two more wonderful ways to get outdoors, enjoy the spring weather, and appreciate God’s beautiful world that He has made!

Are you inspired?

Making Earth Day biblical, but keeping it fun, allows you to create beautiful memories while instilling truth in your children’s hearts! Our world has become increasingly screen-focused and media-focused. This is the perfect chance to pull away from all of that, get outside and get crafty, and learn some new truths about God’s beautiful world! As guardians and stewards of His creation, we should be studying and learning all that we can. Your children will love celebrating this day, and who knows? It might just become one of their favorite holidays – and yours, too!

“The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness; the world and those that dwell therein.”

Psalm 24:1
