Cinco De Mayo: Let’s Have A Faith Filled Fiesta!

by Michelle Lazor

Cinco de Mayo!

Tacos, Burritos, and Queso… Oh my!

Cinco de Mayo is a popular holiday here in the United States. As most of us know, it’s filled with fun and fiestas! But what in the world is Cinco de Mayo, anyway? Besides the amazing food and beautiful tapestries, do you know why it’s celebrated? Do you want to know how to throw a fiesta that has an element of faith but still creates a festive environment for everyone? This will be a one-of-a-kind celebration for all ages!

What is Cinco de Mayo?

cinco de mayoCinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that, surprisingly enough, is not really celebrated in Mexico. In case you’re wondering, no, this is not Mexico’s Independence Day from Spain (Sept. 16, 1810). The day commemorates a battle that was won against the invading French in 1862, despite not being the favored side to win. They eventually kicked the French out of their country six years later, but the win gave hope to Mexicans everywhere and inspired them to take up arms and fight back.

Although the battle was fought in Pueblo, Mexico, it is mainly celebrated in America by Mexican Americans. The holiday is well-known for eating lots of delicious Mexican foods and enjoying Mexican culture.

Let’s FIESTA!

Unlike most of the nation, here at Counter Culture Mom, we enjoy celebrating all of the different cultures and believe we should teach our kids about the history of our world. So, if you homeschool, include Cinco de Mayo into your planning! Or maybe you just want to have a fun fiesta with your family and friends? Here are some of our ideas on how to celebrate that will keep any crowd entertained!

A gospel-driven Cinco de Mayo!

Pass out gospel tracts in Spanish to a few Spanish speakers. We all need Jesus, right? What better way to celebrate this holiday of remembering a win against an enemy than by sharing our hope that Jesus has won the battle against our own enemy? You can always find some Spanish tracts at an inexpensive price at Amazon.

With your children, you could always memorize simple Bible verses in Spanish. Or, if you want to stay on the evangelistic side of things, try making your own festive tracts! You could even make them 2 sided and go hand them out in your neighborhood or at Cinco de Mayo fiesta’s if there are any going on near you!

SALSA dance to some fun música!

Make some noise! What fun is a party without some música? If your children play instruments, have them play along with some Mexican music! Harry Connick Jr.’s show has a great video that’s a ton of fun!

Your whole crew won’t be able to keep from moving to the beat! If everyone is really into it, have a contest! You could even go on your social media accounts with a live feed and have people vote on who has the best moves! Or, turn on some salsa instructional videos from youtube if you don’t want to freestyle it! Just be sure to get moving before you load up on tacos and queso!

What is Cinco de Mayo without FOOD?

After all of that dancing, you are SURE to have a grumbling stomach! Let’s talk food! There’s always the family favorite option of doing a traditional taco bar. Bowls of cheese, salsa, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, seasoned ground beef, strips of chicken, refried beans, and chips are just a few ideas to get you started!

If you’d like to be a bit more adventurous with your Cinco de Mayo spread, you can have more authentic Mexican foods, such as cotija. Cotija is a kind of cheese that is similar to feta cheese. Instead of regular sour cream, try Crema Mexicana. If you’d like to try dessert tacos, get your hands on some cajeta. It is incredible! Drizzle some in your taco with some chocolate chips to make your mouth sing!

Get creative during your fiesta!

Making traditional Mexican party favors is really fun as well! Cascarones are similar to Easter Eggs, but with an interesting twist. Check them out! If you happen to make any, come back and share your designs in the comments!

What about making a piñata? Everyone loves taking a swing or two, or maybe three! This can definitely be a chore, but it’s really fun for everyone if you plan ahead. Check out The Spruce Crafts for easy piñata making guidelines. This activity will surely give your Cinco de Mayo celebration a fun element!

If you forget to prepare or run out of time you can usually find piñatas at your local grocery store. Although, they won’t have the unique touches of your children’s artistic talents! By the time they finish beating that thing open for the beloved candy, I highly doubt it will matter to them much. We just love the fun of a messy activity that is attractive to the littles and creates fun memories!

Throw on your sombrero!

Dressing up with Mexican flair is always a treat! If you don’t happen to have clothes that can be purchased or easily modified to reflect the women’s colorful and flouncy dresses. Men’s Mexican guayabera shirts aren’t very hard to duplicate either. You can always go online and find past parades where these clothes were worn for ideas. On Cinco de Mayo, one wardrobe essential is obviously a sombrero! You could even make your own!

We can’t forget about books!

And last but not least, you can always pick up a book about Cinco de Mayo. There are several to choose from. Although Piggy and Gerald do not have a book specifically about this holiday, they celebrate Happy Pig Day in a great way. I highly recommend the book! You can read it for Cinco de Mayo and any ethnic holiday that comes around.

fiesta¡Olé!

Praise the LORD for the abundance of cultures we enjoy!

“This is the day which the Lord has made;
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Psalm 118:24
