5 Of The Most Sensational Books For Your Kids

by Katrina Cheshire

Books have the power to change lives.

Especially young lives. The books that children read play a huge part in who they become. If you’re looking for meaningful Christmas gifts to give your child, get them good books! I taught myself to read at the age of 4 before my mom had a chance to teach me. I was hungry for stories that could take me on adventures! In my schoolgirl years, I read hundreds, if not thousands, of good books. I reread many sensational books over and over, noticing something new each time.

Books are one of my deepest loves. It’s no surprise, then, that I became a writer. I wanted to give back some of the joy that I received! Good stories startle children awake to wonder. They stir up in children (and adults) a deep sense of truth and excitement for life! Books can accomplish the work of years in a moment. They have the power to change lives, for good or evil.

There are SO many books out there. Too many to read them all! That’s why lists are extremely helpful. As a parent trying to get all the best books for your children, lists can be a lifesaver! Check out this list of 50 Books All Kids Should Read Before They’re 12.

Here are my top 5 favorites from the list!

Age 2-4: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Filled with colorful pictures, this book tells the story of a hungry caterpillar who becomes a butterfly. As the caterpillar eats his way through the book, your little ones will learn about the beauty that change can bring! This story is extremely popular and most definitely one of the most sensational books for a younger audience.

Age 5-7: The Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne

Winnie-the-Pooh is a timeless classic. The cartoons are funny, but the books are hilarious! Your children will love these classic stories about all of their favorite Pooh characters and their many adventures.

Age 8-9: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Perhaps the most famous book series ever written for children, the Chronicles of Narnia are like no other. As a child, I yearned to be able to travel to another world. It wasn’t until I grew up that I recognized the longing in my heart for heaven. Narnia stirs up a sense of wonder that changes lives. A series that is just as marvelous for adults as it is for kids!

Age 10-12: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

This whimsical sci-fi story has at its heart a powerful message. When Meg Murry sets out to find her missing father, she ends up on the evilest planet in the universe. She comes to the point of despair and losing everything…only to find that love alone can conquer evil. This story teaches beautiful truth!

Age 12+: The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

The world will never see another series like this one! The work of a lifetime, Tolkien’s epic is a masterful telling of the history of another world. Filled with beauty, despair, derring-do, and impossible feats of courage, these books are perhaps my favorite series ever. The Lord of the Rings is LONG. Your child may not be up for them yet! The Hobbit, however, is much easier to read! And it is most definitely one of the most sensational books out there! Start with it! But you must read all 4 of these books. You will miss out on so much if you don’t!

And there you have it! Five of some of the best books out there for children! For a longer list, check out the summer book list I wrote a few months ago, here on the CCM blog. Happy reading!
