You’ve been here before: as fear overtakes your body, your heart rate skyrockets, your lips go numb, and it becomes increasingly difficult to take a deep breath. Your fingers begin trembling, your mouth goes dry, and, much to your surprise, you begin to cry. What’s going on?

When fear finds a foothold within us, sometimes, it can get out of hand. And when fear becomes a part of our daily life, it can morph from fear and into full-blown panic. Anxiety and panic attacks are just the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. When we are perpetually stuck in a “fight or flight” response, we have learned to adapt our fear in a very primal way – we want to run from it!

But the Bible gives us the tools we need to deal with fear. Consider the words of Jesus Christ: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)

1 Peter 5:7 aptly states, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

And in Philippians 4:6-7, we are told: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

There is a clear message here! When fear creeps in, we are told to cast our worries and cares upon the Lord. We are not meant to carry these burdens alone. Our first line of defense against anxiety is Jesus. Our second line of defense? The Christian people we surround ourselves with. Our spouses, our family, and our faith-filled friends. This Christian community is also key in building each other up and getting through difficult storms in life. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Gal. 6:2)

When we face hardships or intense pressures, how can we battle through these storms without losing our footing? How can we deal with the overwhelming fears that threaten to take us under? The answer is in God’s Word – His wisdom, His guidance, and in constant fellowship and prayer with Him every day.

To understand the complexities of anxiety and secure attachment, the Counter Culture Mom invited Dr. Geoff and Cyd Holsclaw on the program to discuss tried-and-true methods for overcoming a cycle of perpetuating fear. Listen to Part 1 below!
