249 years ago today, America’s Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, establishing the United States of America, and forever changing the course of human history.
It was a day of celebration as much as defiance. Those men who signed the sacred document were as good as dead if they failed in their quest to gain independence from the world’s greatest military superpower – Great Britain. It was not just a moment of courage. It was a moment of faith.
“Now I will avow, that I then believe, and now believe, that those general Principles of Christianity, are as eternal and immutable, as the Existence and Attributes of God; and that those Principles of Liberty, are as unalterable as human Nature and our terrestrial, mundane System,” wrote John Adams in a letter, years later, while discussing the impact of faith and Christianity on the founding of America.
The Fourth of July is a celebration of America’s independence, yes, and the freedoms that sprang forth from it – most important, of course, being the freedom to worship freely, without persecution – a privilege afforded to very, very few throughout the annals of history.
This great nation, while not perfect, provides a platform for the Gospel to be spread freely and widely. It is a launching point for foreign missions. It is a place to work and live in peace, to train up children in the wisdom of the Bible, and to attend church on Sundays without fear of attack.
Truly, we are blessed to live in America. Let us pray for our nation today and every day, and acknowledge the warrior spirit of faith and courage instilled in us by our brave Founders.
