I remember the first time I found out about abortion. I was about 10 years old, sitting in the gallery of the California Assembly Chamber, listening to state legislators discuss a law on the subject.
I’m not sure if the state Capitol Building in Sacramento still allows the public to sit in the gallery and listen to the proceedings of the day, but at the time, it was an eye-opening experience for a kid from the rural countryside, freshly transplanted to the city. The topic of abortion was very shocking, and I remember my mom leaning over and delicately explaining what it was. My first reaction as a completely innocent kid was disbelief. How could anyone destroy a baby inside the womb? It had never occurred to me that there were people in the world who didn’t view a preborn baby as less than human.
Reflecting on that first moment of genuine shock, I think it illustrates something important: we aren’t naturally inclined to support abortion. Our first innocent, childhood instinct is to flinch when we hear about it. It’s not natural, and it certainly doesn’t seem good. And as former preborn babies ourselves, perhaps there is an innate instinct that screams, “I’m very glad to be alive and that no one snuffed me out before I opened my eyes for the first time in a delivery room.”
But our culture is hellbent on supporting and, dare I say it, worshipping abortion. They call it a “woman’s right to choose,” while disregarding the rights of the human within her – the little life who has done nothing wrong, except dare to exist. It seems very common sense and basic that women should not kill their own babies, and yet pro-choice advocates have actually made this issue a focal point of cultural debate. How did we get here? Why is this even a plot point in our nation’s history?
Psalm 139:13-16 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” And in Jeremiah 1:5, Scripture notes, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
This points to a single Biblical truth: humans are human in the womb. They are made in the image of God, and they are worth protecting and loving.
But our culture has separated the humanity from the human when it comes to abortion, in a move not different at all from many civilizations across time who have worshipped death – those ancients who engaged in debased sexual behavior and tried to throw away the consequences of their sins with a knife. Whether it’s the human sacrifice of the ancient Aztecs or the Israelites offering their own children in the flames to Baal (Jeremiah 32:35), there is a common thread throughout history: civilizations, as they become more debased, tend to do terrible things to its most vulnerable citizens.
America has made good progress in pushing back on abortion. It was a sheer miracle and a blessing from God that Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, returning this critical issue to the sovereign states. It now becomes the duty of the Christian to protect life in the womb by advocating (and voting for) pro-life policies and pro-life candidates whenever possible. Unfortunately, many Christians are afraid to discuss abortion because it has become such a contentious topic, particularly among women. However, the best way to approach abortion is with love, kindness, and knowledge.
1 Peter 3:15 says, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have.” It is good to be prepared to answer even in the most difficult questions, so that we can testify about God’s goodness and His Word. In advocating for the lives of children everywhere, we are doing our part to extend God’s love to our friends and neighbors.
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven,” Jesus says in Matthew 18:10.
A culture that is steeped in such a deep hatred for children is not one that is honoring God’s commands or design for humanity. How can we, as Christians, do our part to stand in opposition to such evil? Speaking the truth is certainly the first step. Being unafraid to stand for what’s right when we are asked what we think or believe about something. Being willing to vote for a policy that will protect children the way God would want them to be protected. Being willing to volunteer or give to a local pregnancy care center or birthing center. These little acts of love all matter, and it can save lives. Don’t live apathetically. Live intentionally!
Speaking of apathy, according to pro-life advocate Seth Gruber, apathy is the biggest enemy of the Christian church today when it comes to the fight against abortion. Seth founded ‘The White Rose Resistance.’ Its mission is to supercharge the church to mobilize and act on behalf of Christ, to fight evil, and to totally eradicate abortion. In his special conversation with the Counter Culture Mom, he discusses abortion, why churches need to do more to stop this great evil, and what caused the slow but steady decline in American morality.
