Sitting in a bad movie? Get up. Get out. Get your money back! Let’s show our kids that doing the right thing matters more than what people think!
You’re at the theater with your kids excited to see the much anticipated movie with popcorn in hand. You did your research. The trailer looked awesome. The ratings were good. But what do you do when things go south FAST!
Well, this past week we were in this very predicament. The movie “The Secret Life of Pets” looked so cute and fun and innocent. We actually waited a week to see it so that Luke’s parents could watch it with us when they visited from Florida.
The first 45 minutes had some hilarious scenes of what pets do when their owners are away for the day. But then things went down hill fast.Duke and Max escape while at the park and find themselves locked in a van by animal control. They are rescued by a cute looking psychotic rabbit and agree to start working for him and his underground gang who live in the sewer. Freaky looking cats get in fights and even the characters’ screechy high pitched voices and nasty laughs bother me. I started thinking, “What are my kids learning at this very moment? How are these behaviors influencing my children?” It was then that I started to feel very uneasy.
So what do you do when you’re in the midst of feeling uncomfortable especially when you’re in public or with your group of friends? I weighed in on my thoughts regarding the movie.
Hopefully it will get better soon.
Hopefully my kids won’t know what’s happening.
Hopefully they will forget what they’ve seen and heard once the movie ends.
What will people think if we get up and leave?
I had an internal conversation going on here. I could wait until the “bad scene” was over or leave so we no longer had to be subject to these negative messages. If this is the conversation you are having with yourself, there’s a good chance you should remove yourself from your environment. Minutes later when the rabbit asked Max and Duke several times to describe to his gang in detail how they killed their owner, my husband and I simultaneously looked at each other and we knew it was time to leave. To our surprise, several other families joined us!
So the lesson I’ve learned this week was that it’s pertinent we protect our children’s minds no matter it takes to do so.

Yes, we got our money back. I explained to the kids why we left early and NONE of them complained!
