Jane Fonda Wasn’t That Fond of Me

Working on the film “Monster-in-Law” with Jane Fonda, gave me the opportunity to share about my pro-life stance with celebs and crew members.

It started out like any other day. I reviewed the early call time, double-checked my wardrobe requirements and entered the directions to the studio in my GPS. Today I was working on a scene with three A-list celebrities, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Lopez and Michael Vartan, for the movie “Monster in Law.” There was never a dull moment while living in Los Angeles. However, this day became rather interesting the second I stepped foot into the hair and make up trailer.

I was always the kind of person who liked causing a ruckus. So here I was in the make-up chair getting my hair curled for a scene where I would play a restaurant patron. I would be eating a fancy meal next to the table where Jane and Jennifer would have a heated discussion over lunch. Yes, people get paid for jobs like this. As I was getting my hair done, I couldn’t help but notice a rather large Pro-Choice sign on the mirror in front of me. I, of course, couldn’t zip it. I asked the woman doing my hair about the sign. What was it for, etc.

This all went down during the 2004 elections when George W. Bush was running for a second term. I think I was the only person in Hollywood with Pro Life, Republican bumper stickers ALL over my car. Hey, they stick to all sides of the vehicle. Who said they only had to be on the bumper?

The stylist responded that it was so important for women to stand up for their rights. It was a woman’s world. Yada Yada. I told her I loved being a woman and I loved babies. I was pro-life all the way. She shockingly replied, “What!!!??? You’re an ANTI pro-choicer?” I slowly responded, “I’m a pro-lifer.” She stared me down in the mirror and this time as she was pulling hard on my hair and ripping it through the curling iron, repeated, “You’re seriously an ANTI pro-choicer?” I slowly responded, (supposedly she didn’t hear me the first time) “I’m a PRO-LIFER. I believe babies deserve the right to life. Your mom had you!? What if she was a pro-choicer?” I said it nicely but to-the-point. She was ticked. (there may have been fumes rising from her head) She told the rest of the women in the trailer that there was a pro-lifer on set and to watch out.

jane fondaMy heart was beating out of my chest as I rose from her chair super thankful I still had hair left on my head and ran to set to prepare for my scene. The word spread fast that a “weirdo” was present, because before I knew it, Jane and some other crew members were passing out “Vaginas are good. Bush is bad.” buttons to the cast and crew. One of them pointed to me and said that everyone could register to vote during lunch except for me; they couldn’t suppress my voting rights that easily, because, luckily, I had already registered to vote! I also coincidently brought articles to set that day covering pro-life laws and current political issues. Several people asked me questions and the door was opened to share God’s truth. I love creating some commotion to get people to ask questions or think twice about what they believe. I like helping others become more bold in speaking about biblical truths instead of being afraid – especially in Hollywood.

At the end of the day, despite the controversy, I had a wonderful time shooting the scene. As I was leaving, a crew member told the crowd of about 30, to wait in the lot before leaving. They made an announcement that they were needing 2 of us to come back to work the next day. Because of what just went down, I laughed and thought there was no way they’d have me back, but a man pointed to me and said, “We want you and him.” I was dumfounded! If God wants you somewhere, even in a hostile environment, He will open the doors.

I hope this encourages you that no matter what you are doing or where you may go, you can share God’s truth with whoever he puts in your path. Be a light in the dark places. Be IN the world not of it.
