Crisis Text Line – A Back to School Necessity!

Besides back-to-school supplies & clothing, inform your kids about the Crisis Text Line. If anyone is in the midst of a crisis – text for help @ 741741.

Wow. It hurts to write this. Summer is almost over and the back to school mentality has already kicked in full gear. Even though I homeschool, the school room is being prepared to add another little munchkin to the Griffin Academy. School supply shopping has officially begun, but with having the supplies and clothes purchased in preparation for the first day of school, comes anther major important necessity every person needs to be aware of – the Crisis Text Line.

With the all familiar sound of the school bell, comes the issues many of our kids face today. Bullying, low self-esteem, divorcing parents, death of a loved one, a break up, are just some of the things our kids deal with on a daily basis. Many children don’t run to their parents or even a school counselor, which is why I think the Crisis Text Line is a great resource for those who are in need of a listening ear and receiving life-saving advice in a hurry.

Nancy Lublin, CEO of Crisis Text Line and founder of DoSomething.org, created this service for hurting people who needed help instantly. She is adamant that this service is not a replacement for long term counseling. Her team’s main purpose is to help the texters come up with an action plan to get the long term assistance they need. “Parents know that texting is actually the best way to communicate with your kids. It might be the only way to communicate with your kids,” Lublin states.

crisis text lineThe Crisis Text Line is such a great concept that every high school and middle school student should be aware of it’s existence in case they or a close friend are in the midst of a crisis. This service is free and easy to use. The only thing needed to connect with this help line is to text your message to the numbers 741741 from anywhere at anytime. The information shared is confidential and the texter remains anonymous. With over 7,600,000 text messages answered to date, (most of them received during the lunch time hour) this help line is something kids are obviously seeing positive results from.

With young people texting much more often than calling or talking to someone face to face, this company offers a solution that is literally impacting millions of lives. So besides getting your kids the latest clothing and back-to-school supplies, talk to your child about the Crisis Text Line. 741741 are the numbers that could keep a person from doing something they might later regret. I literally just texted the help line and a crisis counselor responded within 10 seconds. Excellent service. Amazing concept. All people need to be aware this help exists. In fact, if you have some extra time, now that your kids are heading back to school, they are currently interviewing people to join their team. Check out their website here.

Kudos to all the hard working counselors working overtime to help our kids deal with issues that many of us never had to face in previous generations. Your hard work does not go unnoticed! Us moms and our kids thank you!
